The Centre for Inclusive Money at Nest fair processing notice – Debt and Auto Enrolment project survey

This fair processing notice (‘notice’) provides you with information about how your personal data will be used if you complete the survey, and agree to enter the prize draw by providing your email address. 

Please read it carefully alongside Inclusive Money’s Privacy Policy, which has more information about how your personal data will be used and your data protection rights. We are required under Data Protection legislation to notify you of the information contained in this notice. 

Inclusive Money is running the surveys as part of the Debt and Auto Enrolment research led by researchers at Harvard University (‘Harvard’) in the USA and Nottingham University in the UK. Inclusive Money will share the survey data with researchers at Harvard University and Nottingham University in anonymised and aggregated form, so that they can analyse the data. 

Who is collecting your data

  • Nest hosts the survey and collects responses.  
  • Nest will only collect and use your personal data (email address) if you choose to opt in to the prize draw. 

If you do not provide your consent, your personal data will not be collected. 

The personal data we collect will be processed solely to administer the prize draw for three £100 vouchers. Please note we will use the email address you provide through the survey response to administer the prize draw. 

The legal basis for processing your personal data will be consent in the following situations: 

  • When we administer and manage prize draws for taking part in our research. 

Types of data

We may collect and use the following personal data if you choose to enter the prize draw: 

  • Email address 

 We will not collect or process any special category data as part of this project. 

Data storage and retention

Inclusive Money applies a consistent approach to the retention of data captured for research purposes. All data will be stored securely on approved systems, with appropriate technical and organisational safeguards, including encryption, access controls and secure transfer methods, to protect confidentiality and guard against unauthorised access. 

Identifiable or pseudonymised data, such as email addresses collected for the purpose of administering the prize draw, will be retained only for as long as it is needed for the relevant research or operational purpose. As a general rule, this will be no later than 6–12 months after project completion, unless a longer retention period is justified, documented and approved through the relevant governance process. For this project, the retention period will be reviewed following the survey completion deadline in December 2026, once prize draw administration, analysis and project close-down activities have been completed. 

Data will only be shared with third parties where this is necessary to support the research described in this notice and where appropriate data sharing arrangements are in place. Responses to the research questions will be shared with our research partners, Harvard University and Nottingham University, only in anonymised and aggregated form. Anonymised datasets may be retained for up to 10 years from project completion to support analysis, validation or future research, and will be deleted securely when they are no longer needed or at the end of the agreed retention period. 

Your Rights

You can access your personal data or withdraw your consent at any point. More information about your data protection rights is contained within Inclusive Money’s Privacy Policy. To do this, please email participate@inclusivemoney.org.uk and ask for your data to be removed.

Third-parties

We use third-party service providers and research partners to support the research: 

  • Online survey provider SmartSurvey will host the survey. Your use of the survey may be subject to its privacy policy, but it will not have access to your personal data. Inclusive Money will only receive anonymised survey data from the survey provider. 
  • We will use a platform called Love2shop to distribute the prize draw vouchers to selected winners. You may be asked to agree to Love2shop’s privacy policy and terms of use if drawn as a winner. 
  • We are working on this project with researchers from Harvard University and Nottingham University. They will only receive anonymised and aggregated data, which will not identify you and will not be passed on or sold to any other parties. 

FAQs 

  1. Do I have to take part in the research?

You do not have to take part in the survey or enter the prize draw being offered. You can ask questions about the research before deciding whether to participate. If you do agree to participate, you may withdraw yourself from the research and/or any prize draw offered at any time, without giving a reason, by advising Inclusive Money via email.

You can contact us with any queries or to request to withdraw from the research by emailing us at participate@inclusivemoney.org.uk. 

At your request, any personal data not already deleted will be removed from our records. If you withdraw your consent, this will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before your request is processed. 

2. Are there any risks or benefits in taking part?

The possible risks of participating in the research or entering the prize draw are minimal. We always protect your personal data and take steps to ensure compliance with Data Protection legislation. 

Your participation will support the evaluation of how pensions auto enrolment has affected mortgage uptake and missed debt repayments. By sharing your experiences, you contribute to a deeper understanding of what works well and where challenges arise in real-life money management. This information helps to improve the products and services offered by credit unions and informs policymakers, researchers, and the financial services industry about how to better support people’s financial wellbeing. 

3. Will I be identifiable in any outputs?

No. Your email address is only collected if you choose to enter the prize draw and will only be used for that purpose. You will not be identified in any published outputs or research findings shared with our partners. 

4. Will the research be published?

Anonymised findings from the research may be shared through reports, presentations, articles, website content or other communications. No individuals will be identified in any published outputs. 

5. Who can I talk to if I have questions about the research?

You can contact the research team with any queries by emailing us at participate@inclusivemoney.org.uk. If you have a concern about how your personal data is being used, please contact the research team in the first instance. If you remain unhappy, your concern can be escalated in line with Inclusive Money’s privacy and complaints processes.
